Online Polling Prior to Class December 2015
Abstract/Snapshot:
This learning activity involves posting questions on Blackboard and creating an online polling link for students to contribute to and to see if other class member share the same views and understanding on the topic.
Learning Context Suitable for any learner in lecture. This activity can also be used for distributed learners on mobile devices studying either synchronously or asynchronously.
Rationale The activity provides topics to stimulate conversation in the class and provides the lecturer with immediate feedback about student views and understanding that can help direct in-class learning to address gaps in knowledge and understanding.
Learning Design Encourages reflection by students and lecturer prior to class regarding student understanding of the subject matter and assists in focusing lecture content on those areas where learning and instruction is most needed.
Conditions/Critical Success Factors Knowledge of Blackboard and/or online polling/survey technologies
Completion of poll/survey prior to class.
Resources/Technology Case Studies/Implementation Prior to class:
Create a poll/survey using online polling/survey technology (Blackboard Survey, Google Form, Poll Everywhere or Socrative) - see instructions in Resources/Technology section below.
Embed the URL of the poll or survey into Blackboard using announcements and notify students to complete the online poll/survey prior to class within a defined timeframe.
In class:
Open poll/survey results in Blackboard (or other polling platform) and direct students to the link.
Display analytical overview of poll/survey results.
Based on responses, determine and discuss issues and address any knowledge gaps.
Answer any student questions regarding poll/survey questions and responses.
