Recording and Using the Workplace Reflections On and Off Line December 2015
Abstract/Snapshot:
Capturing and sharing student videos that reflect on the challenges, skills and processes involved in being on a work placement and working within a profession.
Learning Context Learner outcomes
Learners will demonstrate critical reflection by reflecting on their work placement.
Learners will articulate their experiences of the workplace.
Learners will engage with and talk through some of the challenges that they share during their placement.
User Outcomes
A semester by semester increase in student reflections that can be used to enrich the students work placement experiences in other cohorts.
A way of recording and programming for issues that regularly arise in work placements so these can influence teaching in other subjects.
Conditions/Critical Success Factors Consistent level of engagement by students and teacher during class workshop.
Video editing skills required by teacher.
Willingness by students to be recorded and to interview each other.
Challenges:
It may be difficult to workshop questions online.
It is not known how successfully students will collaborate in pairs either offline or online.
A video’s size may prevent it being uploaded.
Teaching staff may not have the skills to edit video and professional development may be required.
Case Studies/Implementation Taking a 12-week semester model, the process is as follows:
Students will workshop interview questions faceto-face and/or online which they use in the final assessment at the end of the year.
The class will agree on a set of questions to be asked in the interview.
The interview occurs towards the end of semester.
Students will work in pairs and interview each other.
The interview will be videoed for assessment purposes.
A teaching staff member then edits the videos according to the themes.
Outcomes A student group that has a richer, more reflective work placement experience and is, therefore, more ready for employment. In addition, video can be used to stimulate discussion with future cohorts.
