The results can be related to customising student learning and modifying learning activities, to improve student understanding of concepts. Diagnostic testing is often best carried out at the beginning of a course or before phase changes or a switch to new content in order to allow time for remedial actions to be carried out. The testing can also be used as a diagnostic tool to verify student understanding during lectures.
