Step 3

Determine the area of elevation (for both wind directions).

Complex elevations have a sloping roof and flat walls, skillion ends or gable ends. These elevations may require separate calculations within the one wind direction.

Note that only half of the wall area is included in the calculation. This is because there is very little wind close to natural ground level.

Wind direction 1

A diagram showing the gable end of the house with dimensions marked - 7.2 m width, 1.2 m high for the upper part of the wall, and 1.5 m for the height of the roof from the top of the wall.

  Area roof = 5.4m2
    (7.2 x 1.5 x 1/2 )

  Area wall = 8.64m2
    (7.2 x 1.2)

  Total area wind direction 1 = 14.04m2
    (5.4 + 8.64)

Wind direction 2

A diagram showing the long wall of the house with dimensions marked - 16.2 m long, 1.2 m high for the upper part of the wall, and 1.5 m for the height of the roof from the top of the wall.

  Area roof = 24.3m2
    (16.2 x 1.5)
  Area wall = 19.44m2
    (16.2 x 1.2)

  Total area wind direction 2 = 43.74m2
     (24.3 + 19.44)
