Using social media for communication (Secret Facebook group)

The use of social media has risen over the past few years. The Secret Facebook group intends to encourage improved communication between the course coordinator and students doing the OHTH2103 (Applied Exercise Science 1) course. As various external instructors teach into the course, the pattern occurs in a community of practice where communication and collaboration is vital for 21st century learning. Students are able to access crucial information from any smart mobile device.

Rationale

Secret Facebook group enhances communication with students to improve their pedagogical skills, understanding of assessment criteria, and gaining access to resources. The pattern has also been created to encourage students to share ideas, resources and to collaboratively work in groups.

Learners/Context

This pattern is designed for tutorial/practical groups of 20 or more students. This is applicable to any course, particularly for courses where there are multiple instructors and venues, as well as students who are off campus (WIL placements).

Alignment

This pattern enhances communication between the course coordinator, external instructors and students on course expectations, assessment requirements, and summary brief/focus of each sport. I was also able to obtain constructive feedback and clarification on students’ progress throughout the course.

Instructions/Processes

Prior to semester

Map out course related materials/ resources to be uploaded.
Attend Social Media Training- DevelopMe
Obtain written permission for the use of social media at RMIT.

In class

Explain to students what the learning pattern entails.
Read the Administrator Guide and instructions on setting up the Secret Facebook group.
Assure students privacy considerations to follow.
Create the secret Facebook group and name the group (E.g. use course code)
Setup the Facebook Secret Group
Invite students by email, attach Student User Guide and Quick Reference Guide (QRG).
Invite academics by email, attach Academic Supervisor User Guide and QRG.
Facilitate student engagement with the Facebook site (weekly update).
