High wind construction requirements

Most residential construction conforms to earthquake design because the bracing that is used to provide stability against the wind also provides stability against earth movement.

A map of Australia shows the acceleration coefficients in various areas. For example, the area a little inland of Perth has an acceleration coefficient of 0.15 to 0.22. Areas near Tennant Creek, Port Augusta and east of Marble Bar also have an acceleration coefficient of 0.15. Bundaberg, Newcastle and Broome have an acceleration coefficient of 0.12.

Note: The acceleration coefficient is a number which indicates the expected severity of the earthquake ground movement as determined under AS 1170.4.
