Overview of a Safe Work Method Statement

There are five steps to creating and having an effective Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS). Select a number on the Job Safety Analysis form to see more information about this section.

You can also download a completed sample Safe Work Method Statement (Word 346 KB).

Remember:The SWMS provides a written record of the process to be used for a task. As this is a record that may be used in court, the parties who have responsibility for the tasks should sign it off.The SWMS is only a written record. Management processes must be in place to ensure workers have the skills to complete the job. There is also a required level of supervision to ensure the tasks are completed as documented. It is important that employees understand the SWMS before work commences. All employees involved in the activity, not just the principal contractor or supervisor, should complete the SWMS.
