Fences and boundary structures

Photo of an old fence which has been made taller by the addition of lattice.
This fence has minor gaps in it and is not straight. It has been extended using timber lattice and does not look to be in good condition.

Take note of the following points for all fences surrounding the site and also for any structures such as garage walls that may be on the boundary line:

  • height of any fence line or structure
  • length of each fence or structure noting its construction
  • any defect noticed in each fence or structure such as split palings, fence slope, damage, cracking
  • general condition.

Remember that neighbours will often try to take advantage of the builder by obtaining a new fence at the builder's expense. Hence it is well worth the effort to carefully document any of these details.
