The question we put forward was &#8220;What is the best way to structure our programs to meet the changing needs of students and industry?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Three experts from various organisations joined us:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/damalascalesghosh\/\">Damala Scales Ghosh<\/a> \u2013 The Learning Hook<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/petermellow\/\">Peter Mellow<\/a> \u2013 Eastern Health<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/miriam-reynoldson\/\">Miriam Reynoldson<\/a> \u2013 Chisholm online<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We began the session with this quote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em> \u201cLearning Design is a bit like teenage sex. Everybody says they\u2019re doing it, but in reality few really are; and those who are doing it aren\u2019t doing it very well.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Mark Brown, Professor and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning, Dublin City University<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Laughter followed, as did some sad reflection on our own teenage years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Damala raised these key points:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Change is now! Technology is driving rapid industry change and industry is driving rapid changes in technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Real world skills- VET provides real skills for real jobs but is time and resource intensive<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Micro masters\/degrees\/credentials \u2013 Smaller, stackable, portable qualifications<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Digital limitations and potential \u2013 Flexibility, scalability, portability, accessibility, standardised delivery but they create challenges for authentic and valid assessment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Future design and assessment \u2013 Assessment focused training can provide learners with accelerated and personalised learning paths.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Peter\u2019s key points included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Online delivery works when it\u2019s well designed and not just digitised content<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Authenticity\/applicability\/context<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Online (can be a blend or a flip)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Incorporate UX UI<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students and staff want an online set of learning resources and learning activities that are attractive, accessible and alive. A vibrant community of practice to assist their learning journey in their chosen subject<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Modularisation of online classes wherever possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Modularisation also reflects a larger trend in society e.g. downloading a song instead of buying an entire album.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Miriam raised the following key points<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Online learning consists of: teacher led webinars, collaborative learning activities, practical placement tasks, simulated workplace tasks, knowledge assessments and self-paced online learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Online learning has numerous benefits for students, including flexible study time and bite sized learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were some consistent points of agreement from our experts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Online learning provides tremendous advantages for VET.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students and Industry are demanding smaller educational chunks rather than 3 or 4 year degrees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can\u2019t just digitise your content for an effective online experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The VE Design team is continuing to host its series of think tanks to explore the future of VET and what today\u2019s top designers are working on right now.
