When it comes to online learning environments, there\u2019s the perception that forming connections and getting students engaged with the course content and their peers is incredibly difficult or impossible without an in-person component. However, the popularity and use of social media platforms demonstrate how online environments can be effective in drawing people in, networking, and sharing ideas and information.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you are presenting face-to-face or through Canvas, the key is commu<\/span>nication.<\/span>\u00a0V<\/span>ideo presentations (e.g.,\u00a0<\/span>TedTalks<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Linkedin<\/span>\u00a0tutorials, etc.<\/span>)<\/span>, podcast series,\u00a0<\/span>or<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>commentary and\u00a0<\/span>articles<\/span>\u00a0with the widest reach<\/span>\u00a0tell stories that are easy to follow<\/span>, using plain English that make them accessible to a large\u00a0<\/span>audience and<\/span>\u00a0convey why their topic is important and relevant to the\u00a0<\/span>viewer\/listener.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Having a strong narrative\u00a0<\/span>for your course topics with clear instructions of what to do and<\/span>\u00a0how it will apply to\u00a0<\/span>future\u00a0<\/span>assessment or workplace success<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>will give reason and motivation to your students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>face-to-face classrooms<\/span>\u00a0where<\/span>\u00a0teachers can\u00a0<\/span>get a sense of whether their students are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>interested, bored, or confused<\/span>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>looking\u00a0<\/span>around the room<\/span>\u00a0and making\u00a0<\/span>immediate\u00a0<\/span>adjustments to their delivery<\/span>, this\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>much more difficult\u00a0<\/span>to do\u00a0<\/span>in an online setting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>aving multiple points for students to engage and discuss the content\u00a0<\/span>can address th<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>issue. Ask students questions during an online session, break them up into smaller groups to talk about what is being covered,\u00a0<\/span>have learning activities for them to practice and drop-in sessions for targeted questions, encourage them to contact you directly if t<\/span>hey\u2019re struggling, get them to organise their own online study groups, and\u00a0<\/span>set-up discussion forums on the topics for students to post, comment, and question<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>This is i<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>line\u00a0<\/span>with how\u00a0<\/span>flexible delivery promotes the use of different types\u00a0<\/span>of learning materials<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>offers\u00a0<\/span>great<\/span>er<\/span>\u00a0freedom\u00a0<\/span>as to\u00a0<\/span>when students access content<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For teachers not wholly comfortable with online platforms themselves, this is a great opportunity to learn from your student<\/span>s to discover what works, what doesn\u2019t, and how to improve your\u00a0<\/span>delivery<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>G<\/span>et their feedback\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>how\u00a0<\/span>the different\u00a0<\/span>Canvas and Collaborate Ultra\u00a0<\/span>tools<\/span>\u00a0and features are being used<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>As it can be hard to openly critique someone else\u2019s work, ask student<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to do a<\/span>\u00a0self-assess<\/span>ment<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0own<\/span>\u00a0participation and\u00a0<\/span>how<\/span>\u00a0they\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>interacting with\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0course<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This can provide insight into you<\/span>r students, what they\u2019re comfortable with, their workloads,<\/span>\u00a0any<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>accessibility\u00a0<\/span>concerns, etc. By\u00a0<\/span>welcoming<\/span>\u00a0students to have their\u00a0<\/span>say and integrating their feedback<\/span>, you are fostering engagement and collaboratio<\/span>n. They become partners in the design of your course and their own student journeys<\/span>, a big part of student-centred learning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
