Last week we started offering support sessions to teachers\u00a0<\/span>in preparation\u00a0<\/span>for Semester 2 Course Uplift<\/span>, providing tips, examples,\u00a0<\/span>a template,\u00a0<\/span>how-to videos, and drop-in questio<\/span>n-and-answers<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>sessions<\/span>, with a focus on structuring course content in Canvas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The sessions continue this week<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>highlighting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>set-up, presentation, and student guidance for course\u00a0<\/span>learning materials and learning activitie<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since lockdown and the\u00a0<\/span>shift to remote<\/span>\u00a0delivery, Canvas has<\/span>\u00a0featured more prominently in the student journey in many programs and courses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For some,\u00a0<\/span>this has involved a shift in unde<\/span>rstanding how Canvas can be used and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>versatility<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>afforded\u00a0<\/span>when\u00a0<\/span>teaching\u00a0<\/span>and learning\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>an online environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Diversification of l<\/span><\/b>earning materials<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning materials encompass<\/span>\u00a0everything from\u00a0<\/span>in-class lectures to essential and supplementary\u00a0<\/span>resources<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In many cases where face-to-face lectures, labs, and tutorials were the main so<\/span>urce of content delivery, Canvas was used as a repository for storing PowerPoint slides<\/span>, handouts,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>worksheets<\/span>\u00a0for activities and assessments<\/span>. It was expected that students would attend classes\u00a0<\/span>to receive instructions on when to use the learning materials listed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since flexible delivery, teachers have come to recognise how\u00a0<\/span>Canvas can\u00a0<\/span>broaden the type of\u00a0<\/span>learning<\/span>\u00a0materials<\/span>\u00a0they use and reference<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>housed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>one location\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>easy to share with their colleagues and students.\u00a0<\/span>Not limited to PowerPoint slides<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>PDF or Word documents, teachers can\u00a0<\/span>embed audio\/video files and\u00a0<\/span>post\u00a0<\/span>link<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to websites, podcast series, books and articles<\/span>, micro-credentials, and extensive library resources<\/span>. Lectures<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0lab<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0and tutorial demonstrations can be recorded<\/span>, and narration added to slide presentations for students to view and review on their own time.\u00a0<\/span>While the amount and range in information sources\u00a0<\/span>that can be included can be exciting and engaging, it can also be overwhelming, underscoring the importance of contextualisation and\u00a0<\/span>instruction when presenting materials.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Better\u00a0<\/span><\/b>feedback<\/span><\/b>\u00a0for learning activities<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adapting\u00a0<\/span>in-class activities to the online environment has been challenging but a lot of teachers have embraced the change and tackled the problem\u00a0<\/span>in many innovative ways. Some of these successes have bee<\/span>n posted on the\u00a0<\/span>Flexible Delivery site<\/span><\/a>, showcasing how Canvas, Collaborate Ultra, and Google Drive<\/span>\u00a0have been used in learning activities and assessments\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>great effect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning activities are non-assessed<\/span>\u00a0but\u00a0<\/span>form<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>an integral part\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0the student journey as they allow student<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>practice and test<\/span>\u00a0t<\/span>heir developing knowledge and skills<\/span>. For this to be useful, students require feedback to ensure that they\u2019re on the right track. Building learning activities<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>direc<\/span>tly into Canvas accommodates this need.\u00a0<\/span>Teachers can type in feedback for correct and incorrect\u00a0<\/span>quiz\u00a0<\/span>answers<\/span>, moderate discussion<\/span>\u00a0forums,\u00a0<\/span>and post suggested responses for reflect-and-reveal activities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only can\u00a0<\/span>students receive more immediate feedback<\/span>, but it can also be more targeted.\u00a0<\/span>For practical activities where teachers want to see the students\u2019 step-by-step process in solving a problem or creating an artefact, having students submit<\/span>\u00a0digital evidence (e.g., video or image series) in Canvas\u00a0<\/span>gives teachers a more wholesome picture of each student\u2019s work.\u00a0<\/span>Instead of\u00a0<\/span>having to divide their attention between students in a\u00a0<\/span>full\u00a0<\/span>class or studio setting,\u00a0<\/span>teachers can more closely see each student\u2019s workflow and identify areas where\u00a0<\/span>greater support may be needed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is also increased opportunities for students to work together and give peer feedback.\u00a0<\/span>Meeting up over Collaborate Ultra or Microsoft Teams for g<\/span>roup\u00a0<\/span>learning\u00a0<\/span>activities may be easier<\/span>\u00a0for students to organise. With<\/span>\u00a0discussion forums, students can respond to each other\u2019s posts<\/span>, providing mutual encouragement and sharing\u00a0<\/span>suggestions,\u00a0<\/span>links<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and other resources<\/span>\u00a0related to the topic<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
