In-text referencing when using direct quotes from an article or a chapter written by one author in an edited book with one editor.

There are two options for in-text referencing:

  1. Adding a citation at the end of a sentence.
  2. Using the author’s name as part of your sentence.

Essential information to include:

  • The family name of the author.
  • No initials are required.
  • The year of publication.
  • Place a comma between the year and the page number.
  • Write  the page number/s as p. 95 or pp. 95- 97.
  • Leave a space between the p. and the number.
  • Use ‘single’ inverted commas, to indicate the quotation.

Note:
It is essential to write exactly what is written in the quote.

The following sentences have been taken from:

Seymour, J 2005, ‘China’s environment: a bibliographic essay’, in K Day (ed.), China’s environment and the challenge of sustainable development, M.E. Sharp Inc, New York.

(a) Seymour (2005, p. 251) suggests that 'while China's reform era has opened up new "frontiers" in environmental discussion and activism, conservative political influences continue to promote environment-blind policies, particularly in such areas as energy generation'.

(b) 'While China's reform era has opened up new "frontiers" in environmental discussion and activism, conservative political influences continue to promote environment-blind policies, particularly in such areas as energy generation' (Seymour 2005, p. 251).

Note:

  • The full stop is placed after the bracket (See - Example b).

If the article/chapter was written by two or three writers the in-text citation will be:

Quack and Morgan (2000, p. 27) stated that '......'.

OR

'......' (Quack & Morgan 2000, p. 27).

If the article/chapter was written by more than three writers the in-text citation will be:

Morgenstern et al. (2005, p. 24) suggest that '......'

or

'......' ( Morgenstern et al. 2005, p. 24).
