A project schedule is not 'set in concrete'. It is a working document that is used throughout the project to check that tasks are being started and completed on time. Particular attention is given to tasks on the critical path because any hold-up in these could jeopardise the project's completion date.

The actual start and finish dates for each task can be noted on the project schedule and compared with the original plan. If tasks are falling behind schedule, especially critical tasks, action needs to be taken to ensure that the entire project does not end up running over schedule.
