
Professor Michael Gibbons

Professor Michael Gibbons is Director of Science and Technology Policy Research at University of Sussex, United Kingdom. Professor Gibbons took up his current position upon retirement as Secretary General of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Prior to this role, he was Founding Director of the Programme of Policy Research in Engineering Science and Technology, and Director of Research and Technology Transfer at Manchester University. Professor Gibbons has an active interest in science and technology policy and has undertaken research in the process of technological innovation in industry and the evaluation of research. He is co-author of two major books on the changing nations of knowledge production. His work has been vigorously taken up by South African authorities, who have adapted the notion of Mode 2 research in the transformation of the higher education system. He has been a member of the UK Economic and Social Research Council and Chair of its Research Priorities Board. He has acted as a specialist advisor to the UK Parliamentary Science and Technology Committee, and has been a consultant to the OECD.
